Hanover men to play in Wilmington Kiwanis Classic

The team huddles up to talk strategy

HANOVER, Ind. – After splitting a pair of home matches last week, the Hanover men's soccer team will take to the road this weekend to participate in the Wilmington Kiwanis Classic in Wilmington, Ohio.

The Panthers will play Cincinnati-Clermont (Ohio) Friday, Sept. 15 and then cap the weekend against Wittenberg (Ohio) Saturday, Sept. 16.

Both of Hanover's matches last week finished with the same 2-1 score. Otterbein (Ohio) defeated the Panthers 2-1 Saturday, while Hanover rebounded with a 2-1 win in overtime against Wabash (Ind.) Sunday.

Junior Tanner Korfhagen (Cincinnati, Ohio) scored two of the team's three goals, including the game-winner against Wabash for his first two scores in a Panther uniform. For his efforts, Korfhagen became the first Hanover player this year to be named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week.

Through four matches, Korfhagen leads the team with two goals and four points, while four other players have tallied one goal each.

Freshman goalkeeper Will Bedel (Walton, Ky.) has posted a 2-1 record in three starts in the early going. The first-year keeper has allowed just over a goal per match and has made 17 saves for a 2-1 record.

Cincinnati-Clermont is 2-4 overall through six matches this fall. The Cougars had dropped four straight contests before defeating Southern State (Ohio) 8-0 in its most recent match. Of those six matches, two were played against HCAC schools. The Cougars fell 2-1 to Defiance (Ohio) and 5-2 to Mount St. Joseph (Ohio).

Wittenberg is off to a tough start as the Tigers are 0-4-1 overall. They have been out-scored 15-4 and most recently lost 3-1 to Manchester and 6-1 to Thomas More. Wittenberg's tie came in 2-2 final against another HCAC school, Anderson.

Five different players have scored a goal each for the Tigers, while junior goalkeeper Jack Snider has allowed 11 goals in four starts.

Prior to playing Hanover, Wittenberg is scheduled to play Mount St. Joseph Wednesday, Sept. 13 and then open the Kiwanis Classic against the host, Wilmington (Ohio), Friday.

Friday's contest against Cincinnati-Clermont is set to start at 5 p.m., followed by a 1:30 p.m. start against Wittenberg Saturday afternoon.
