DEFIANCE, Ohio – The Hanover men's tennis team displayed a dominating performance in singles play Saturday, winning its regular season finale at Defiance, 8-1.
The Panthers (11-10, 5-2), secure the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference's No. 3 seed in next weekend's tournament with the win. Hanover has also won seven matches in a row, including each of its last five conference contests. With the loss, Defiance concludes its season 3-17 overall and 1-6 in the HCAC.
A pair of freshmen, Jed Fajt (Greecncastle, Ind.) and Roger Trombley (Signal Mountain, Tenn.), each earned 6-0, 6-0 victories in singles play. Fajt won at No. 5, while Trombley earned his decision at No. 6.
Only conceding one game over two singles sets were senior Dakota Smith (Greenfield, Ind.) and junior Brent Barrett (New Palestine, Ind.). Smith finishes the regular season with an unblemished 4-0 record in conference play, while Barrett concluded HCAC regular season action at 5-2.
Also finishing with a 5-2 HCAC record this spring is sophomore Landon Carrico (New Albany, Ind.). Carrico, who competed in the top singles spot Saturday, won 6-2, 6-4. The sophomore teamed with junior Alec Bates (New Albany, Ind.) at No. 2 doubles as well, where the duo won 8-2.
The other Hanover doubles point came from Trombley and sophomore Jonathan Helmers (Cincinnati, Ohio) in the third slot, 8-0. Helmers went on to win at No. 4 singles as well, 6-2, 6-0.
Overall, the Blue and Red lost just 10 singles games over 12 total sets. Hanover also blanked the Yellow Jackets in seven singles frames.
With the regular season now completed for HC, the Panthers turn their attention to the HCAC Tournament, which will take place Friday through Sunday, May 4-6, at West Indy Racquet Club in Indianapolis. Hanover's opening round opponent has yet to be determined for Friday evening.
