HANOVER, Ind. – The Hanover College football team enters the weekend 1-1 overall after claiming the team's first non-conference win since the 2010 season against Adrian, 49-28.
WEEKEND REVIEW: As a team, the Panthers finished the contest with a game-high 433 yards of offense. Hanover also rushed for a game-high 187 yards with six rushing touchdowns. The Panthers wasted little time getting on the board as sophomore Sam Jackson (Indianapolis, Ind.) blocked a punt and returned it 55-yards for the go ahead score. Also recording touchdowns in the contest were junior (Evansville, Ind.) Shawn Coane and junior Walt Ballinger (Beech Grove, Ind.) with two touchdowns apiece. Ballinger's 53-yard score was the longest of his career. Senior Matt Rier (Wellington, Fla.) led the defensive efforts for the Blue and Red as he tallied a game-high eight tackles with two sacks.
HCAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Jackson earned his first Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference honor as he was named the Special Teams Player of the Week following his outstanding effort. The sophomore finished the week with a blocked punt and a touchdown return for 55-yards.
INSIDE THE STATS: Junior quarterback Noah Wezensky currently leads the Blue and Red with 490-yards. The junior ranks fourth in the league in yards per game at 245 and second in touchdowns with two. In the back field, junior Shawn Coane leads the team and HCAC in yards per game at 121 and third in touchdowns at two. Junior Walt Ballinger has also posted a strong start to the year in the back field with 125 rushing yards and a team-leading three touchdowns. On the defense, senior Matt Rier leads the efforts with 12 total tackles, including eight solo. He currently ranks second in the league in sacks with two.
SCOUTING MARYVILLE: The Scots enter the contest 0-2 overall after falling to nationally ranked Centre, 27-22. In the game with the Colonels, Maryville was led by Jacob Bunch posting 177 yards on 15 rushes. The sophomore averaged 11.8 yards per carry, as he scored a touchdown. Kris Hawkins added 88 yards on the ground with a 12.6 yards per carry average, while Rodney Murray added 44 yards rushing.
UP NEXT: The Panthers will open HCAC action on Saturday, September 28 when they welcome the Beavers of Bluffton University to Alumni Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1:30 PM.
