HANOVER, Ind. – The Hanover College football team returns to the NCAA Division III Playoffs this weekend for the second consecutive year as they travel to face No. 1 Mount Union in the opening round of action. The Panthers and Purple Raiders are slated for a noon kickoff, Saturday, Nov. 23.
PANTHERS RETURN TO THE PLAYOFFS: Prior to the 2018 campaign, the Panthers last playoff appearance dated back to the 2003 season. Hanover is 2-13 all-time in NCAA and NAIA postseason play, including a tough loss to No. 9 North Central a season ago. HC holds a 1-4 record in opening round Division III contest with the lone win coming at Hope (Mich.) in 2000.
DEFENDING THEIR TITLE: The Panthers earned their second consecutive automatic qualifier into the NCAA DIII Playoffs following a perfect 7-0 mark in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference action. The last time Hanover posted a perfect sweep of the HCAC dated back to 2003. The Conference title is the second under head coach Matt Theobald and marked the programs second since the 2003 season.
RECORD BREAKING PERFORMANCE: Junior, running back, Shawn Coane (Evansville, Ind.), alongside a powerful Panther defense wrapped up the season etching their names into the record books. Coane set school records in career rushing yards with 3,031 total yards breaking the previous record of 3,022 set back in 1973-77 and season rushing touchdowns with 19 breaking the previous record of 17 set in 1948. The Blue and Red defense landed among the HCAC best as they broke the conference record for passing yards per game (116.3) previously held by Defiance dating back to the 2006 campaign and the points per game allowed among league opponents (7.7), breaking their own record set in 1997.
LAST MEETING: The last meeting between these two teams dates back to the 1995 season when Mt. Union defeated Hanover in the opening round of the NCAA National Playoffs 52-18. The 1995 campaign saw the Blue and Red go 10-1 overall with a perfect 6-0 conference mark.
SCOUTING THE RAIDERS: Mt. Union enters the matchup as the no. 1 ranked team according to the D3Football.com poll announced Sunday, Nov. 17. They finished the regular season 10-0 overall, 9-0 in Ohio Athletic Conference action en route to their 30th OAC Title. Mount Union has an 103-17 record in the NCAA Playoff games and have appeared in the Stagg Bowl 21 times since 1993.
