DEMOREST & ATHENS, Georgia – The Hanover College men's golf team took second place after entering round two of the Piedmont Fall Invitational ranked third in the 11-team field.
The Panthers finished with a two-day total of 612 (308-304) strokes, five strokes better than the team in third place. Winning the Invitational was host Piedmont with 576 (293-283) strokes.
The Panthers were led by senior Austin Zapp (Union, Ky.) with a two-day score of 148 (74-74) strokes, finishing tied for fifth in the 58-golfer field. Zapp opened day two with a bogey on one, before carding three straight holes of par to enter the back nine just one over. On the back, he would par six straight holes before closing out the round with a tough double bogey for a score of 74.
Sophomore Luke Van Leeuwen (Kettering, Ohio) turned in a 152 (77-75) stroke performance, good enough for 12th place. Van Leeuwen played a strong round as he made the turn at two strokes over par before shooting even for the final five holes to card a day two total of 75.
Senior Addy Allyn (Culver, Ind.) also claimed a top 25 finish as he placed tied for 21th with teammate Van Leeuwen. Allyn carded a two-day total of 157 (77-80) strokes. The senior registered a pair of birdies on the front nine before carding a birdie on 11 to finish the round with an 80.
Senior John Summerlin (Indianapolis, Ind.) finished 26th overall with a two-day total of 160 (80-80) strokes. The senior carded a birdie on the front nine before making the turn at two over par. He concluded the invitational with a round two score of 80 strokes.
Rounding at the field for the Blue and Red was junior Charlie Bullerdick (New Market, Ind.) with a score of 157 (82-75). On day two, Bullerdick found success on the back nine as he turned in two birdies.
The invitational concluded the teams fall season.
