HANOVER, Ind. – The Hanover men's tennis team rallied from an early deficit Wednesday evening to secure a 5-4 home victory over Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference rival Transylvania (Ky.).
The Panthers trailed 2-1 after doubles play but won the first four singles matches to finish to secure their first conference victory of the season. Hanover's triumph improves the team to 4-6 overall and 1-1 in league play, while the Pioneers fall to 6-10 overall, 2-2 in the HCAC.
Freshmen Keith Asplund (Jeffersonville, Ind.) and Pablo Gallart (Serra, Spain) won the No. 3 doubles match in quick order, 8-0. With the team score tied at one-all, juniors Landon Carrico (New Albany, Ind.) and Jonathan Helmers (Cincinnati, Ohio) rallied and forced a tiebreaker at No. 2, before falling 8-7. The duo of Asplund and Gallart improve to 3-2 this season and have won back-to-back outings.
Carrico has a winning streak of his own, taking the No. 2 singles match in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1, for his fourth straight victory. The junior was followed by sophomores Roger Trombley (Signal Mountain, Tenn.) and Jed Fajt (Greencastle, Ind.) in the Nos. 5 and 6 spots, respectively, with winning scores of 6-2, 6-1 and 6-3, 6-1. The victories led HC to a 4-2 advantage in the team scoring.
Securing the overall match was Asplund, who won the No. 3 slot in straight sets by a count of 6-2, 6-2. Losses at Nos. 1 and 4 resulted in the 5-4 decision for the Panthers. Asplund and Carrico are now tied for the team-high in season singles victories at six.
