Men's tennis tops Franklin for fourth straight win

INDIANAPOLIS – The Hanover College men's tennis team ran its current winning streak up to four matches Sunday afternoon, defeating Franklin on the road in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play, 9-0.

With unfavorable weather in the forecast, the Panthers (6-6, 3-1 HCAC) returned to the University of Indianapolis Tennis Center Sunday, which is where they began their 2019 spring slate with an exhibition against the Division II Greyhounds. Hanover found more favorable results this weekend, picking up its third shutout victory in the last four outings.

The Blue and Red earned two quick decisions in doubles play, taking the Nos. 2 and 3 slots by a score of 8-2. Freshmen Keith Asplund (Jeffersonville, Ind.) and Pablo Gallart (Serra, Spain) ran their team-best winning streak to three matches at No. 3. Juniors Landon Carrico (New Albany, Ind.) and Jonathan Helmers (Cincinnati, Ohio) won the second spot, improving to 2-2 in league play.

Securing the No. 1 doubles match was sophomore Roger Trombley (Signal Mountain, Tenn.) and freshman Connor Garrison (Louisville, Ky.). Trombley and Garrison won 8-4 to complete the sweep for HC.

The Panthers then took all six singles matches against the Grizzlies (7-7, 4-1 HCAC). Carrico was the first to finish, taking the No. 2 match, 6-0, 6-0. The junior has now won six consecutive singles outings and is 4-0 in the HCAC.

Additional straight set victories came from Helmers and sophomore Jed Fajt (Greencastle, Ind.). Helmers won at No. 3, 6-2, 6-2, while Fajt followed with a 7-6, 6-2 triumph at No. 4. Fajt has now won four straight singles matches.

A trio of singles matches went three sets, including Gallart in the top spot. The freshman won the opening set, 7-6, lost frame No. 2, 6-1, and then took the tiebreaker, 12-10. Garrison won at No. 5 by a count of 6-3, 0-6, 11-9. Rounding out the match at No. 6 was freshman Jalen Simmons (Indianapolis, Ind.), 6-1, 4-6, 13-11.

The Panthers will now break until Saturday, April 20, when they host current HCAC-leader, Rose-Hulman, in an 11 a.m. match.
