WILMINGTON, Ohio - Playing its final non-conference games of the regular season, the Hanover softball team swept a doubleheader from Wilmington Thursday afternoon winning game one 10-0 and the nightcap 7-2.
After a scoreless first inning in game one, the Panthers got the first run of the day on junior Carlie Roark's (Hebron, Ky.) RBI single for a 1-0 lead.
Hanover then broke the game open in the third with six runs on six hits, a walk and and two errors. Senior Dabney Skutt (Indianapolis, Ind.) led off with a single and stole second. On the stolen base, the throw went into centerfield and she advanced to third. As she made her way to third, another errant throw allowed her to score to make it 2-0.
Sophomore Shelby Edington (New Goshen, Ind.) singled, and sophomore Bailey Miller (Charlestown, Ind.) walked after the first two outs were made to load the bases. Roark stepped to the plate for the second time and delivered a bases-clearing, three-run double and then scored herself when freshman Rachel Cox (Indianapolis, Ind.) followed with an RBI single to give the Panthers a 7-0 lead.
Powers completed the scoring in the fourth. With Skutt and Smith reaching base on a walk and a single to start the inning, Powers connected on her second home run of the season, a three-run shot, to make it 10-0.
That was more than enough run support for freshman Lily Beurman (Evansville, Ind.) as she limited the Quakers to only three hits and one walk with five strike outs in a run-rule shortened five-inning complete game shutout. She improved to 7-7 with her second complete game shutout in as many weeks.
Skutt, Smith, Powers and Roark finished with two hits apiece. Skutt and Smith also scored a pair of runs each, while Powers and Roark drove in four runs each.
Game two saw Wilmington take an early 1-0 lead with a single tally in the first. The Quakers maintained that lead until the top of the third when Hanover posted another big inning with five runs this time.
All five of the runs were unearned with the first scoring on a wild pitch. Powers plated the second run with a sacrifice fly, and senior McKenzie Writt (Franklin, Ind.) scored Smith with a bunt single for the third run of the inning. Edington capped the five-run inning with her fourth home run of the season, a two-run shot, to give the Panthers a 5-1 lead.
Wilmington (13-17 overall) cut the lead to 5-2 in the bottom of the fourth only to see Writt drive in a run with a single in the fifth and the final run score on an error in the sixth for the to extend the lead to five runs.
Writt led all players with three hits in the game. She also drove in two and scored another. Skutt and freshman Ashley Swearingen (Clarksville, Ind.) recorded two hits each with Skutt scoring twice, and Edington and Writt driving in a pair apiece.
Junior Sydney Griffin (Cambridge City, Ind.) improved to 10-8 on the season with another complete-game effort. The junior allowed two runs - one earned - over seven innings of work with two walks. She also matched her season, and career-high with 11 strikeouts in the victory.
Hanover, now 17-15 overall, will next host Defiance (Ohio) Saturday, April 28 in a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader. It will also be Senior Day for the Panthers' three seniors with game one set to begin at 2 p.m. at Kops-Bedel Stadium.
